Hi Friends,

Summer is ON and protecting your eyes along with your skin is very important.  Eyes are delicate part of the human body.  Long exposure to UV rays can damage inner eye layer (retina) or even develop eye cancer.  Lack of proper protection can lead to several other problems like -
  • Partial or complete vision loss.
  • Burning pain.
  • A feeling that something is in your eye (foreign body sensation).
  • Decreased vision.
  • Photophobia.
  • Cataracts. (eye lenses gets cloudy, which results in blurred vision)
  • Raise the risk of a common sight-robbing disease later in life, according to a new study.

But you can take prevention by wearing hat and sunglasses.  Here are certain guidelines to protect your eyes from damaging UV rays of the Sun -
1) Don't buy the sunglasses just to look good but check their label to ensure that they are offering 99 - 100% UV protection, they should also absorb most HEV rays.  This ensures that the glasses will block both type of UV rays. Don't judge the eyewear with it's price just check the label.  Sometimes tinted, dark and high prices eyewear are just a fashion accessory.  Children too should wear real sunglasses.  Toy eyewear for them looks cute but does not offer any protection to your kid's eyes.

2) UV and HEV protection is nothing to do with the color of the sunglasses.  Even lighter color sunglasses provide the same amount of sun protection like dark colors (but protection should be mentioned on the label)

3) Sunglasses should have UV protection, but not all sunglasses need to be polarized. UV is short for ultraviolet, which refers to a kind high energy electromagnetic radiation that we can't quite see. While polarized sunglasses are a different treatment that's added to lenses to help block out glare off of objects like highways (important for driving) and water.

4) Be specific while buying eyewear.  Dark and tinted shades does not mean that they will protect you from harmful UV rays.  Buy the eyewear that are labeled as 'Sunglasses' .

5) Be sure that your sunglasses shouldn't distort colors and affect the recognition of traffic signals.

6) If you wear prescription glasses, consider buying clip-on sunglasses.

7) If you have sunglasses and you are not sure of it's UV protection, rush to your eye care professional with it to get your glasses checked.

8) It is important to wear sunglasses even if you are wearing contact lenses that offers UV protection (to protect all the parts of eyes).

9) If you stay out for long, wrap your face after wearing sunglasses.  This will protect the UV rays to enter from the sides of the sunglasses.

10) Wear sunglasses in shady places too.  Although UV and HEV exposure is reduced somewhat, the eyes will still be exposed to UV rays reflected from buildings, roadways and other surfaces.

So friends, from now onwards always wear sunglasses with proper protection whenever outside (even on cloudy days) to protect your eyes from harmful UV and HEV rays.

STAY HEALTHY
